For the third time, Alliance française de Karachi organizes a painting exhibition of Central Jail prisoners – Karachi Inmates.
This exhibition will feature 70 pieces of ‘Imprisonistic’ Art by Senior Students of Central Prison Karachi’s Fine Arts School.
Present IG Prisons Nusrat Mangan believes that colors could harness the untamed character of prisoners commenced Fine Arts School in Central Prisons Karachi in 2007. Since its inception many known artists visited the school to lecture. Sikandar Ali Jogi was hired as a full time teacher and has taught over 500 prisoners since the school’s opening.
In 2009 Nusrat Mangan organized the first exposition (in the history of Pakistan) of the work done by the prisoners of the Jail. At that time the French Consul General noticed that very few people visited the exposition in prison due to security reasons and he offered to hold a two-day exposition at Alliance Française, which proved to be a great success. Daily Dawn ran an editorial on the event titled ‘A Ray of Hope’.
The amount collected from the sales at AFK expo was handed over by the Consul General to IG Nusrat Mangan which was then distributed to the artists.
In 2013, the amount collected by Alliance française was RPK 222.000 integrally redistributed to the artists.
